| Located at Ponce De Leon, Florida, this lighthouse (opens new browser window) stands 175 feet high with the light being viewable at a distance of up to 20 miles. The structure was completed in 1887 and replaced the original 45-foot tall 1835 tower which was destroyed due to an accumulation of various events-most notably a hurricane and Seminole Indian attack.
A number of different lenses saw use in this lighthouse. The original kerosene lamp was a first-order fixed Frensel lens. In 1909 the kerosene lamp was replaced by an incandescent oil vapor lamp. 1933 saw the replace of this lamp with a 500 watt electric lamp. At the same time, the first-order lens was replace by a third-order revolving lens. The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation and is operated by the US Coast Guard. In 1998 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The lighthouse is available for tours between the hours of 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. during the summer months and 10:00am - 5:00 pm during the fall and winter months. The climb to the top is via 177 stairs. Last update: 03/10/03 View from the top #1 ****** View from the top #2 LightHouse HomePage **** **** Previous page |
