Ft. Pickens once was the prison that held Geronimo, the Apache Chief. The fort once was at the western edge of Santa Rosa Island. However the island is slowing moving to the west. This movement is caused by currents picking up the sand from the eastern end of the island and depositing it on the western end. The fort is now more than a 1/4 mile from the western end of the island
