P245 (29343) Old Faneuil Hall, Near Quincy Market, Boston, Mass.

29343 Old Faneuil Hall, Near Quincy Market, Boston, Mass.

Faneuil Hall is the strong building with straight walls directly in front of this picture. It has a bell in the belfry and a flagpole on top. Mr. Faneuil gave this hall to the city of Boston long, long ago. Men who wanted the colonies to be free from oppression made speeches here to arouse the people. So it was called the cradle of Liberty.

The first floor of Faneuil Hall has always been a market. Farm wagons used to stand outside under the tree. Upstairs is the large room for meetings. When Faneuil Hall was first built there were no buildings near it, no automobiles standing around, no telegraph poles.

As time passed buildings went up around the famous hall. The colonies became free and had a president. A statue of the second president was placed in an open space near the hall. The square has become one of the busiest scenes in Boston. It needs a traffic cop. Later buildings have been torn down but old Faneuil Hall, the Cradle of Liberty, still stands.

19211 U.S. Soldiers in Germany, Infantry on Review

See how the flags wave in the breeze! It must be hard for the color-bearers to hold the flags steady. One carries our own American flag and the other flag of the regiment.

General Pershing and crowds of people are watching the soldiers and the bands playing. Every soldier has his gun cleaned, his buttons and shoes polished, and his uniform brushed. Everyone wants to help his regiment look well.

Notice how they work together. They all have the same foot forward and they carry their guns the same way. When the officer in charge gives a command they all obey instantly.

The soldiers are on parade besides the Rhine River. Do you know how they got there?

16790 Civil War Veterans in Parade, 1917, Boston, Mass.

Perhaps your grandfather or great-grandfather was in this parade. When grandfather was a young man all the young men went to war. That was when Abraham Lincoln was president. That was long ago and the men who were young men then are very old now. They have a society called the Grand Army of the Republic. Perhaps you have heard it called the G.A.R. They come together every year in some big city, and they always have a parade. There are not as many men in the parade as there were years ago.

People like to see the brave old men who once fought for their country. Notice how many people are watching the parade. Farther down the street there are more people. Do you suppose they are cheering?

How many American flags can you county? Can you find one soldier who is not dressed like the old men? Who is he? Why is his uniform different?

P248 (V23180) Iroquois Indian Village, Canada

V23180 Iroquois Indian Village, Canada

When you are older and read the history of our country and Canada you will learn more about the Iroquois Indians. White people and other Indian tribes were afraid of the Iroquois. They were a strong, rich tribe. Their houses were larger than those of other tribes. Their fields of corn and pumpkin were wide and well tilled.

These Indians were also great warriors. They would go many miles from home to fight their enemies. When they were on the warpath they killed many other tribes of Indians. White people who went too far from their settlement were often caught and killed. That is why people feared them.

Those times were long, long ago. In this picture you see Iroquois dressed in their finest clothes because they are celebrating a great event with the white people. They do not go on the warpath any more. But they have brought many of their old fighting weapons to show how Indians and white people fought long, long ago. They have set up a village of tepees to show how they used to live.

What fighting weapons can you see and name?

Indians are now our friends. We must be sure to be the right kind of friends to them.

P249 (23206) Indian Pueblo, New Mexico

23206 Indian Pueblo, New Mexico

This Indian house is called a pueblo. The Indians of the Southwest almost all live in this kind of houses. They are called Pueblo Indians.

What kind of city house does this make you think of? How do the families who live in such houses in the city go up from the ground floor to their floor? How do the Pueblo Indians get to the first floor? Why do they sometimes pull the ladder up after them as they go up?

Many Indian families live together in the pueblos. Around the pueblos they have pasture for their animals. On some of the land each family raises vegetables for its own use. These they hang up to dry on the walls of the house. When they are dry they store them in some of the rooms on the first floor of the pueblo.
