P230 (26398) A Home Garden

26398 A Home Garden

Have you ever had a garden of your own? What did you plant in it? Write a list of all the things you see growing here. Put a mark after the things you have ever planted in your own garden.

Then make a little list of all the things these people had to do to raise this garden. Talk over the list with the other children to see if you have left out some important things. Put a mark after the things you see these people doing in their garden.

Do you think this family gets all its food from this garden? Why do they have such a little garden? Do you think they sell their vegetables?

Look at the plan of the garden. See where the flowers are planted. Why do you think they planned the garden that way? Would you make a plan of a garden before you planted your seeds? Why?

If you would like to do so, you could draw the plan of a garden which you would like to have. If your school is near an empty field, you could have a school garden like this home garden.

P231 (18256) City Street Cleaning Machine

18256 City Street Cleaning Machine

This is a street cleaning machine. In front of the machine are some sprinklers. These wet the dirt and dust a little so that it does not blow into the air. Do you see the big brushes? What makes them work? The dirt, leaves and other bits of refuse which the machine sweeps up must later be collected and drawn away. Would it not be fine if this were a vacuum street cleaning machine?

Some cities are doing the same thing our mothers are doing. They are finding a more sanitary way of keeping the streets clean. Our mothers are giving up brooms and are buying vacuum sweepers to clean their rugs and carpets. Why are vacuum sweepers better than brooms? Why are vacuum street cleaning machines better than machines which brush the streets and only gather the dirt together?

Cities must keep their streets clean to help the people who live on them to stay well. If the streets are dirty, flies breed and carry diseases to children and babies. When the wind blows, everyone has to breathe the dusty air and they may get colds.

What can you do to help keep the streets of your city clean?

What kind of a street cleaning machine has your city?

P232 (29399) A Public City Market

 P232 A Public City Market

29399 A Public City Market

All these people have come to the market to buy or to sell things to eat. Some of the people are farmers. They loaded their trucks or wagons and started for market very early in the morning when it is still dark. When they have sold their fresh fruits or vegetables they will go back to work on their farms on in their truck gardens.

Some of the people are selling fruits that grew too far away to be hauled to market in trucks. These men bought fruits from wholesalers and brought them to market to sell to other people. They bought some fruit by the large box or crate and will sell them by the dozen.

Most of the people are buying foods for their families. Some have market baskets, some have bags, and some have come in their automobiles and will carry things home in them.

See how many different kinds of foods you can find in the picture.

Which ones are sold by the dozen?

Which ones are sold by the pound?

Which ones are sold by the peck or bushel?

Which ones came from near-by farms?

Did you notice that some foods are not shown on this picture? Perhaps they are sold in stalls inside the market house. Why do you suppose some foods are not sold in outdoor stalls?

Something to Do

Draw a picture of a well filled market basket.

P233 (26397) Public City Market From The Outside

26397 Public City Market From The Outside

Look at all the people who have come to this market. Which people do you suppose came very early in the morning? Why did they come? Where do they live? What did they bring? What did they have to do before they came? Other people came later. Most of them came after breakfast. Why did they come? What did they bring? Where do they live?

A market is a place where people buy and sell. Who are the buyers in this market? Who are the sellers? Make a list of the things which you think people could buy. Buying and selling is sometimes called trading. In olden times farmers seldom received money for their produce. They really traded their produce for other things which they wanted. Nowadays most traders use money. Mothers go to market with money. What happens to the money?

You know the story called "The House that Jack Built." See whether you can make up a story like that about a farmer and something which he brought to market. Or make up a story that tells how and when some apples grew and what happened to them.

P234 (27246) Sorting Mail in a Large City Post Office

27246 Sorting Mail in a Large City Post Office

Have you ever seen the postman without his hat and his coat and bag? Do you know what a postman does in the post office? This picture shows how the mail is sorted before it is given to the postman. Then the postman must sort out his own mail so that it is in same order as the streets on which he delivers it. Do you know the route of your postman?

Outgoing mail is collected from mail boxes and brought to the post office in sacks. It must be sorted without delay and sent to the right trains. The stamps must be cancelled. First class mail must go out on the very first train.

Sometimes people do not address their mail plainly or correctly. Do you know what happens when the post office people cannot read an address nor find the person for whom the letter is intended?

Do you know what else happens in the post office? Have you seen a railway mail car?

Not very long ago our government started a new kind of mail service. It is faster than the fastest train. It used to take four or five days to send letters from coast to coast. How long does it take now? How is it done?
