P220 (29392) An Engineer and His Locomotive

29392 An Engineer and His Locomotive

For thirty-four years the engineer who is looking from the window has made runs on this railroad. He loves his beautiful engine with its great single eye. He knows that his engine will obey his touch on the lever and the throttle.

He takes care of his great pet, No. 3642, by oiling, testing, and repairing it at the end of every run. In return the huge machine responds at once when he puts on the brakes or more steam.

On coming from the station the engineer looked at the round lights on the bridge overhead and probably saw a color which meant, "Approach," or "Prepare to Stop." As he neared the switch where the rails of two tracks cross, the signal changed to "Stop." He must read the signals carefully so that nothing will happen to the mail and express in the first two cars and to passengers in the other coaches.

The track-walker, leaning on the compressed air switch, is also working for the safety of the train. He tests the rails in the yard and out on the road. The engine bell rings as the train pulls into the station and out from the train shed. It must go slowly because there are so many tracks. When the train gets into the open country how it will whistle and run!

P221 (27148) Freight Cars in a Railroad Freight Yard

27148 Freight Cars in a Railroad Freight Yard

This is a busy freight yard.

All of these empty cars a waiting to be filled and sent on a journey. Some will travel hundreds of miles. Two cars standing on the same track today my be many miles apart tomorrow.

Don't you think the yardman must be a very busy man? He must get these cars started on their way to make room for more cars.

The yard man must call upon the little switch engine to help him clear the tracks. When cars are wanted he must find them by number. Then the switch engineer has to get them with his engine and make them up into a train.

How can the switch engine get from one track to another?

How does it take hold of the cars?

P222 (26395) Loading the Truck with Vegetables for Market

26395 Loading the Truck with Vegetables for Market

This Farmer is getting ready to go to town. His wife and daughter are helping him. He is loading his truck with carrots, beets and beans and other vegetables. He will start for town very early in the morning. First he will go to a grocery store and deliver some vegetables which the grocer ordered. The grocer is one of the farmerís regular customers. But the grocer buys only what he thinks he can sell. So the farmer must take part of his load to market.

At the market, the farmer sells things to women who come with their market baskets to buy fresh vegetables. As soon as the farmer has sold everything he drives home.

Before he had an automobile the trip took much longer. Now he often gets home in time for breakfast, but sometimes it is almost noon. As soon as he gets home, the farmer puts on his working clothes and gets to work. There is much to do on a truck farm.

P223 (26409) The Chicago, LT. Smith's "Around-the-World Plane" back at Bolling Field, Washington D.C.

26409 The Chicago, LT. Smith's "Around-the-World Plane" back at Bolling Field, Washington D.C.

When your father was a little boy very few people had ever heard of an airplane.

Orville and Wilbur Wright watch the birds fly and though that a machine could be made to fly, too. They worked for years before they made one that would stay in the air. Finally they made one that could really fly.

There are airplanes now that have flown clear across the ocean, over mountains and valleys, through all kinds of weather. The men who piloted them must have been brave and strong.

This is the picture of one of the newest and best airplanes.

Some day you may ride in an airplane. Who knows?

P224 (18208) Traffic Policeman, Cleveland, Ohio

18208 Traffic Policeman, Cleveland, Ohio

Some boys wish to be policemen when they grow up. What do you say about it? Perhaps you think it is an easy job to be a good policeman, but it is not. In the first place you must eat the right food and keep clean, and have plenty of fresh air so you will grow tall and strong. If you are not a big man you cannot be a policeman. You never saw a small policeman did you? Next you must learn all about your city and how to keep it clean and in order. Then you must know all the laws of your city. Some of these laws tell how to drive horses and automobiles. They tell on which side of the stree these may go and how fast and when they must stop.

After you have studied all these things for a long time, perhaps you can be a policeman and wear a uniform. Maybe you can be a traffic policeman. It would be fun to help people cross the crowed streets. If you put up your hand all the automobiles coming toward you must stop. They could not go until you let them. You could see these school children were safe when they wished to cross the street to get to their homes after school. You would not let any careless person run over them.
