P115 (23100) Sheep and Lambs, New England

23100 Sheep and Lambs, New England
It is spring. Look at the long ragged wool on the big sheep. They have worn their coats all winter and never washed or brushed them once. You can tell by the long ragged wool that it is spring. It is almost time those woolly coats were sheared. The lambs you see here are another sign of spring. They come then. These are yet so small they have to drink milk as all babies do. One is trying to get his dinner from his mother as she walks along. The grown-up sheep are fed on hay in the winter. Sometimes they are given green vegetables and grain. Maybe the farmer has grain or salt in the dish. Whatever it is, the sheep want it very much.
We can guess something else about the season of the year. It is early spring, perhaps March, for it is still cold. How do we know? Why Sammy and Jessie, who are holding the two lambs, have on their thick coats and winter caps and mittens.
We use wool in making all kinds of wolen cloth. Woolen cloth is very warm. sheep give us other things, too. Of course you know we eat the meat me get from them. If meat comes from grown-up sheep it is called mutton. It is comes from a young one it is called lamb. From the skin of sheep we get a very soft leather. Perhaps your baby's shoes are made of this.

7331 Shepheard and His Flock, Judea
The Bible tells us about shepherds like this one. It says that the very night Jesus was born in Bethlehem there were shepherds on the mountains near by. They were watching their flocks as this man is doing. An angel of the Lord came to them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them. The were afraid. Then the angel said, "Fear not, for I bring you good tidings of great jou. This day there is born in Bethlehem a Saviour which is Christ, the Lord. Ye shall find the babe lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "On earth peace, good will toward me."
Then the shepherd said to one of the another,"Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass." And they went with haste and found the baby lying in a manger.
Perhaps these are the hillsides where those shepherds of long ago watched their flocks that wonderful night. Perhaps this shepherds watches his flocks in the very same places. Before and since that time in the land of Judea shepherds kept their flocks. But no others have seen the angel of the Lord nor heard the voices of angels singing.

P117 (8098) A Happy Family

8098 A Happy Family
Grunt, grunt, grunt. Perhaps trhe little picks who are getting their dinner are happier than those who are not. The mother pig ought to be proud of her large family. But she cannot know how useful they will be. The farmer who owns them knows that.
He has given them a large clean field for their home. When they are too big to get milk from their mother, he will feed them skim milk and then greenn stuff from the farm. After they are grown up he will give them corn to make them fat. Why does he want them fat? Because he raises pigs for their meat. The heavier they are the bigger price he gets for them. A bushel of corn is worth much more to the farmer if it is turned into pork.
Now let us think of some of the meats we shall get from these little pigs. First there are pork chops and fresh pork for roaasting. The trimmings will be chopped, mixed with spices and herbs and made into sausage. Most of the meat will be smoked. Part is called ham and part bacon. The fat from these pigs will be called lard. Perhaps you have seen this in pails. We use it in cookings.
Maybe if these little pigs knew into how many things they will be made, they would grunt louder than ever.

P118 (20224) The Bee Man looking at His Bees
|
|
20224 The Bee Man looking at His Bees
Most boys and girls like honey. It is made from the sweet juice of flowers. You couldn't make it. Bees do that for us. In every hive there are three kinds of bees, a queen, workers, amd drones. The queen lays all the eggs. The workers gather all the honey, make the wax and builds the cells. They take care of the baby bees and feed them bee bread. The drones are lazy fellows and never do any work. When the workers get tired of feeding them they put them out of the hive and let them starve.
In the winter there are no flowers and the bees rest. They live on honey left in the hive or ar fed on sugar. In the spring they are ready for work. The bee man fills the hive with wooden frames. In each he puts a sheet of wx or a part of a sheet. The bees build the honeycomb on these. They fill some of the six-sided cells with honey which they gather from the flowers. In other cells are bee bread or eggs or baby bees.
The bee man is looking at the frames to see if the bees are filling the cells full and if there are plenty of baby bees. He has used the smoke pot you can see. The smoke has made the bees a little sleepy so they do not sting him.

27291 Saint Bernard Dogs and the Old Boat Keeper, Jasper Park Lodge, Alberta, Canada
Far up in the north of western Canada there is a lovely stream upon which travelrs like to row. The stream runs through one of the Canadian National Parks. In the park is a lodge and a boathouse. The old boatkeeper has two pure blood Saint Bernard dogs. Jaspar Park has many steep and dangerous trails. The Saint Bernard dogs are trained to trace lost travellers and to rescue those lost in snowstorms.
Perhaps you have heard of the Hospice of Saint Bernard, high up in the Alps of Switserland. That is where monks first raised dogs which the called Saint Bernards and trained them to go out into the storm to savebelated travelers. Many stories are told of the brave deeds of St. Bernard dogs.
