P40 (11479/21328) "And Oh and Oh, the Daisies Blow" / Summer-Children Gathering                              Yarrow

11479 "And Oh and Oh, the Daisies Blow"

Here is a big field of daisies. The flowers are almost as tall as the children. These children have picked large bunches of daisies. Can you tell what they will do with the daisies?

They could make daisy chains to put around their necks. They could make little cups. They could make daisy dolls with little yellow faces. They could take thein into the house and put them in big vases. Then the daisies would help to make their house pretty. They could take the daisies to their grandmother.

Some children take big bunches of flowers to school to make the schoolroom prettier, too.  Do you think these children take flowcrs to school? One of the best things to do with a pretty bunch of flowers is to give it to a sick person. Sick people like to have something pretty to watch while they are getting well. It helps them to get well faster, because it makes them happy.  If you were one of these children, what would you do with your- flowers?

P41 (26388) Summer- On a Children's City Playground

26388 Summer- On a Children's City Playground

What a happy time boys and girls can have at a playground. During vacation they love to come here to play. These children live in a very crowded city. There are few nice yards because the houses are built close together. The playground. is the safest place to play,

How many ways of having fun can you see in the picture? The slide is always crawded. Big brothers and sisters are careful of the little ones. They are always watching so that no one will get hurt.

The children learn to do many things at the playground. The girls make dresses for their dolls. They, learn to weave pretty baskets. The boys make toys out of wood. Some boys can do this so well that people will buy the toys from them.

Sometimes the playground teachers take the children to a park for a picnic. They play all kinds of games. If there is a lake or a pond the children can go wading. Some of them learn to swim.

At the end of the summer, prizes are given to the children who have made the nicest things at the playground. Once some boys made a Noah's ark. They sawed the animals out of wood and painted them.

P42 (w26387) Summer- A Large Picnic Party on a Motor Boat Ride

w26387 Summer- A Large Picnic Party on a Motor Boat Ride

There are two kinds of boats on this lake. The large one is a launch. It has a motor in it to make it go. The other two boats are row boats. The men in the row boats are pulling hard on the oars. The man who is all alone is in a flat-bottom boat. Broad, flatbottom boats are safer than boats with a point keel because they do not tip. They are harder to row than those that are narrow and pointed.

The man who is running the launch does not have to work very hard. He must know how the engine works and how to steer the boat. He steers it by turning a wheel. The wheel moves the rudder in the direction he wishes the boat to go. Rowboats are steered by rowing with the right or left oar, according to the direction in which you wish to go.

A motor boat goes much faster than a rowboat. It is more fun to row a boat than to sit in a big boat with nothing to do. The boys and girls in this launch are not old enough to row a boat. When they grow older and know how to swim they will go rowing too.

P43 (18257) Summer- A Family Picnic Party in the Woods

18257 Summer- A Family Picnic Party in the Woods

This picture shows one of the reasons why everybody likes summer. That is the season when picnics in the woods are the most fun. The weather is warm and bright. The ground is dry. The trees are leaved out and make good shade from the heat of the sun. Can you give more reasons?

This family started away from home just before lunch time. Their automobile has brought them many miles in a short time. What a fine lunch they are having! Do you see what dessewrt is going to be.

What do you think they will do after lunch? Some will play ball. Mother and her friends will go for a walk along the beautiful river. The girls will look for a awing and play games among the trees or on the shore.

Just befor sunset father and big brother will take the party for a row down the winding river. They will all get into the automobile and drive home. Tired but happy, they will be glad to go to bed and rest.

P44 (26386) Summer-Outdoor Swimming Pool

26386 Summer-Outdoor Swimming Pool

At which season of the year do you think this picture was taken? It must have been a very fine, warm day. Many girls are learning to swim in this pool. Their mothers like to teach them to swim. The mothers like to swim, too.

Swirnming pools are usually shallow at one end. This is the shallow end of this pool. At the other end of the pool the water may be over the heads of everybody. You do not see any men or boys swimming in this pool. Their turn will come tomorrow,

Everyone should learn to swim. These girls will be able to swim well when they are older. A good place to learn to swim is in a pool.

Are you learning to swim?
