P30 (v24851) Rock-bound Coast of Finistere, France

v24851 Rock-bound coast of Finistere, France

This is part of the rocky coast of France. When the sea is rough the waves beat up against the rocks. It is a beautiful sight but it is very dangerous for ships. There are so many reefs and ledges. That is why there is a lighthouse just beyond the little rocky islands. If ships sail around the lighthouse, the water is deep enough to be safe.

Do you see the ship coming in? One of the French boys in the picture seems to be watching the ship. This family has been having an outing on the beach. The boys have been looking for shells and little live animals. What do you think they found?

P31 (v16858) Bird's-eye View of Naples (East) and Vesuvius, Italy

v16858 Bird's-eye View of Naples (East) and Vesuvius, Italy

Naples is a beautiful city in Italy. If you were standing on the balcony of a house in the western part of Naples, this is the picture you would see. Near by you would see the streets and the houses and shops in the busiest part of the city. Beyond the houses you would see the bluw waters of the bay. A pier gos far out into the water. On the other side of the bay is Mt. Vesuvius. Can you see the smoke coming out of the top of this mountain.

Mt. Vesuvius is a valcano. Do you know the difference between a mountain and a volcano?

Sometime hot melted lava flows down the side of this volcano and covers up the houses and the trees. Lava is a rock which has been melted inside the volcano.

P32 (w26384) Emerald Lake, Sierra Nevada

w26384 Emerald Lake, Sierra Nevada

What color is water? HAve you ever seen water that looked blue or green? The water in this lake looks so green that it is called Emerald Lake. What is an emerald? What makes the water look green? What kind of trees do you see on the mountain side?

Not far from this lake are dry lands. They are called dry lands because they do not get any rain and no crops can grow on them. Perhaps some day men will find a way to water the dry lands by using the water in this lake. The farmers will come and sow seeds and raise crops. Dry lands are very cheap. Do you suppose there are big farms in the dry lands because the land is so very cheap?

P33 (11484) Early Spring or Late Winter, Tapping a Maple Tree

11484 Early Spring or Late Winter, Tapping a Maple Tree

It is a bright morning in March. The frost is still in the ground. The air is fresh and cool. Dick and Tom and Betty have come with the farmer into the maple woods. Here are the trees from which maple sugar comes.

Have you ever eaten hot cakes with maple syrup for breakfast? These children can tell you just how the syrup is made. The farmer drills a hole into each tree. Into the hole he puts a little wooden spout. "Drip! Drip!" The sap runs from the hole into the bucket.

All day the children help the farmer watch the buckets. When a bucket is full the farmer must empty it into a large tank. There is a little house in the woods called the sugar house. Here the sap is cooked over a large fire. It is cooked a long time till it becomes a light golden color. Then it is put into cans to be sold as maple syrup.

Some of the sap is cooked until it makes a hard cake of maple sugar. Maple sugar is made very early in the spring when the nights are frosty and the days are bright. The sugar makers are glad that it is cold at night. They know that the sap will not flow then. They can have a jolly party in the sugar house at night while the sap is cooking.

P34 (21306) Spring-Pulling Up Sprouted Acorns

21306 Spring-Pulling Up Sprouted Acorns

It is a pleasant day in April. Jane and Mary are playing under an old oak tree. They have found some acorns hidden among the dead leaves. These acorns had fallen from the oak tree las autumn.

Something strange has happened to the acorns. They have split open. Little oak sprouts are growing from the seeds inside the acorn shell. All winter the acorns have been sleeping under the leaves and snow. Now the warm sun has waked them up. The April rain told them it was time to begin work.

The little seeds began to stretch themselves. They pushed on the hard acorn shell until it cracked open.

It takes many, many years for an oak tree to grow as large as the one in the picture. Jany and Mary have a tree garden in the corner of their yard. They are going to plant their baby oak trees there.

Would you like to watch an oak tree begin to grow? In the spring you can fill a box with green moss. Put some acorns in this mossy nest. Keep it in a sunny window. Water it every day. Soon you will see your acorns sprout.

Something to Find Out.

1. What happens to big oaks after they are cut down?
2. Do all oak trees have the same kind of leaves and acorns?

Something to Do.

1. Make a collection of oak leaves,
2. Make a collection of acorns.
3. Look for sprouted acorns in the woods.
