The mountain is so high that the snow never melts on the top. What kind of trees do you see in the picture? They grow on the sides of the mountain but they cannot grow in the snow at the top. The place above which it is just too cold for trees to grow is called the timber line. Some of the snow near the timber line melts and runs down the side of the mountain. The water in these mountain streams is always ice cold because it comes from a very cold place. Sometimes mountain streams run over high rocks and make waterfalls. Copyright The Keystone View Co.

26383 Bar Harbor from Scotts Hill, Mount Desert ME This is a city by the sea. Do you see the three islands? You will be surprised to know the city is on a large island. Just as the water goes all around the small islands, so it surrounds the large island. The ships in the island harbor could sail around the little islands in a few minutes. It would take a few hours to sail around the big island. The islands are not very far from the mainland. Ships ply back and forth between the islands and the mainland. That is the only way to reach the islands. These islands are off the coast of Maine. Many people go there in the summer to spend their vacations. 26295 Manhattan Island, N.Y., as Seen from an Airplane Manhattan Island is so large that it does not look like an island at all. But it has water all around it. This picture looks like a map, doesn't it? It was taken from an airplane. You can see real houses and streets and the river. On a map you would see dots or squares for the houses and lines for streets and the river. A map which shows hundreds of cities you would only see one dot for a whole city. The houses and streets would not show at all. This picture shows how part of New York City looks from an airplane. Does it look like that to a bird? We could call it a bird's-eye view then, couldn't we? Notice how straight the streets are. Broad way is about the only crooked one. Can you find it? Central Park is the place where you see trees and the water. Can you see the big white building on the right side of the park? That is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Teachers of New York City take their children there to show them beautiful pictures and the wonderful things that people of other countries and of other times have made and used. This is a Swiss village on the mountain side. Below the village is a lovely valley. Above it are the towering mountains. That snowy peak at the back of the picture is called the Matterhorn. If you have read Heidi you know how the inside of the nearest house looks and you know where Heidi went with the goats. Switzerland has so many beautiful lakes and the mountains that people from all over the world got here to enjoy the scenery. Do you know anything else about Switzerland? V23417 The Whirlpool Rapids from Steel Bridge In a quiet little brook you can look down and see your own face, and the pebbles on the bottom. What makes this water all foamy and white like the soapsuds you make when you wash your hands? Farther up, where you cannot see, the water falls over a big, high cliff and then rushes swiftly down through this narrow gorge. Every day the water carries away more earth and rock. Probably when you are grown up the gorge will be much deeper than it is now. In some places in the river there are deep holes. The water whirls around and around these holes and makes whirlpools. The gorge is very beautiful and people like to look at the whirling water and the high cliffs on the side. But the gorge is so deep that people could not see well from the top. A railroad has been built close to the water's edge on the lower bank. It was put there so that tourists could see the whirlpool and the beautiful scenery. It is called a scenic railway.
