P20 (23085/29345) Minnehaha Falls, Minnesota

29345 Minnehaha Falls, Minnesota

This is a picture of the beautiful Minnehaha Falls. Do you know who Minnehaha was? See if you can find the poem or the story of Hiawatha in one of your books. Find out who Minnehaha was and what her name meant. Do you think this is the kind of country the poem tells about? Where might Hiawatha pitch his tent?

If you have ever seen falls like these, you know what a roar the falling water makes. Do you suppose there is much weight in the water that keeps falling over the rocks? What do you call the round places in the water where the water falls?

Can you tell how people have made other waterfalls work for them? Where were the old mills built? Can you draw a picture of the way water turns the paddle wheel? Do you know that many cities get there electricity from water falls like these? A part of the water goes into huge pipes. The water goes so fast and gives such push that it turns the great dynamos that make the electricity that way. They say they have "harness the waterfalls." What do they mean by that?

P21 (6342) The Allegheny And Monogahela Rivers Join, Pittsburgh, Penna.

6342 The Allegheny And Monogahela Rivers Join, Pittsburgh, Penna.

Here is where two rivers join, making the beginning of one of our largest reivers. The river at the right in the Monogahela; the one nearest the top of the picture is the Allegheny; the one in the foreground is the Ohio.

When the white people first came here they built a fort on the very spot you see between the two nearest bridges. The first houses were all built on this "Point," as it is still called It is said Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other city in the United States. Why?

It has the greatest iron and steel mills in the world. If you were to go up the Monogahela a short didtance you would see almost all of them. Much of the coal used in making the iron ore into iron and steel is brought down this river from West Virginia. Some comes down the Allegheny River. Oil is also brought down the Allegheny from the Pennsylvania oil fields. Sometimes the Ohio River here is covered with great flatboats or barges loaded with coal. Where did it come from? Where do you suppose it is going? How have these rivers Pittsburg to grow into such a great city?

P22 (W26382) A Sheltered Harbor

W26382 A Sheltered Harbor

One day when a cold wind was blowing did mother send you around to the other side of the house to play? Why? To get out of the wind. The house kept it from blowing upon you. It sheltered you.

This is just what is happening in the picture. The big hill keeps the wind from blowing so hard upon the water. It makes a safe harbor or shelter for boats during a storm. When a big storm comes at sea the wind blows the water into great waves. It tosses even the biggest ships up and down and sometimes tears them pieces. Little boats like these would surely be lost. At such times all sailors are glad to get to a safe harbor like this one. The great waves will never reach them here.

Can you find a motor boat in the picture? Can you find a sailboat? In what kind of boat is the man nearest to the front of the picture? In which kind of a boat would you rather ride? Why? What are the things that look like bridges built out over the water? For what are they used?
