6342 The Allegheny And Monogahela Rivers Join, Pittsburgh, Penna.
Here is where two rivers join, making the beginning of
one of our largest reivers. The river at the right in the Monogahela; the
one nearest the top of the picture is the Allegheny; the one in the foreground
is the Ohio.
When the white people first came here they built a fort
on the very spot you see between the two nearest bridges. The first houses
were all built on this "Point," as it is still called It is said
Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other city in the United States. Why?
It has the greatest iron and steel mills in the world.
If you were to go up the Monogahela a short didtance you would see almost
all of them. Much of the coal used in making the iron ore into iron and
steel is brought down this river from West Virginia. Some comes down the
Allegheny River. Oil is also brought down the Allegheny from the Pennsylvania
oil fields. Sometimes the Ohio River here is covered with great flatboats
or barges loaded with coal. Where did it come from? Where do you suppose
it is going? How have these rivers Pittsburg to grow into such a great city?
