P15 (21324) Sailing Toy Boats

21324 Sailing Toy Boats

All aboard for the boat race! The boats belong to the little boys. Do you suppose they made their boats? The boys have sticks to push the boats off. The wind will carry the boats to the other side of the pool. The children will have to run around the pool to see which boat wins the race. The sails on the boats are all alike. One boat has a flag on it. One boy has a little boat in the water. Perhaps some day he will have a sailboat too.

When you are grown up you can ride in a large sailboat and learn to guide it over the blue waters of a lake ora bay.

P16 (26376) Boy Scouts In Camp

26376 Boy Scouts In Camp

If you have ever gone camping you know how much fun it is. There is so many things to see and do. You can go for long hikes in the woods. You can gather beries and flowers, or watch for rabbits and squirrels and birds.

If your camp is by a river or lake you can go fishing and bring in a mess of fish for dinner. You can learn to swim and row. This will give you muscle and make you strong.

It is great sport to play on the beach, building dams or digging in the sand. There is so much to do that the days are not long enough.

This is a boy scouts' camp. It is placed near a lake by a grove of elm trees. The boys are getting their orders for the day. It is not all play in such a camp, but it is a pleasant life. The boys will go home stronger, happier and better for having been there.

P17 (23618) Snowcapped Popocatepetl

23618 Snowcapped Popocatepetl

When you look at this picture you see a mountain higher than any in our country. Summer and winter there is snow on its top. Once it was a volcano. That is a mountain which has a hollow place inside. This hollow leads deep down into the earth. From the opening at the top comes smoke and hot ashes. Now this mountain does not smoke any more. It is a dead volcano.

People climb Popocatepetl just for fun. Perhaps you would not think it fun. It is a long climb and very hard work. Part of the way you can ride on a mule. At last you must walk. As you go higher the air grows colder. That is why the top is always covered with snow. Something else strange happens, too. The air is not so thick as you go higher. It is not so easy to breathe. You cannot climb right along. You must often stop and get your breath. At last you are at the top. How far away can you see. You can also look into the great hole from which the smoke and hot ashes came. We call that a crater.

When you are ready to go down perhaps your guide will give you a mat of grass and let you slide to the edge of the snow. That is easier than walking.

P18 (13853) Where Snow and Ice Never Melt

13853 Where Snow and Ice Never Melt

Perhaps on some hot summer day you have wished you could sit down on a cake of ice. If you went to a place Called Glacier in Canada you might do that every day in summer. Glacier is very high and quite cool. Near it is a mountain call Sir Donald. On the sides of Sir Donald there is snow all year around. If you climbed up there you could throw snowballs in summer.

Near Sir Donald there is something we call a glacier. It is really an ice river which begins at the top of a mountain. The sun shines on the snow which is always there. It melts just enough so that it packs together and at last becomes ice. New snow keeps falling on the top of the mountain, making new ice and pushing old ice downward. So the glacier moves dow the side of the mountain. The stones this man is walking on have been brought down by the glacier.

Near the foot of the mountain where the air is warmer is the end of the glacier. Here it melts and runs away in a real river. But always there is the ice river flowing down the mountain. So you see that any day in summer you might go out and sit upon the ice river in the picture.

P19 (15992) Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia

15992 Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, Australia

Is this cave a fairy palace? It is really a palace of wonders. We can see shapes of fruit, vegetables, animals and people. In some places the walls of the cave seem to be covered with fine white lace. Just as we go in we see something that looks like a frozen fountain. If we call out the echo of our voice will come back to us.

This wonderful cave is not made of snow and ice. It is made of limestone. Many, many years ago, before the limestone became hard, a stream of water made the hollow place. Then drops of water with some of the soft limestone began to drip from the top of the hollow. Some of the drops of water began making points of limestone like icicles hanging down. They are called sta-lac-tites.

Other drops of water fell to the floor and built up sharp points of limestone. hese are called stalagmites. Some of the sta-lac-tites and sta-lag-mites grew together after a long time. They become all sorts of lovely shapes.

There are many rooms in this cave. They are lighted with electric lights. If we were to visit the cave we would wear overshoes and raincoats. Water is always tripping from the walls. In some places there are lovely pools of water on the floor of the cave. They are like mirrors. We could look into them and see the fairy wonders of the cave.
