P10 (21305) Down the Hill on Sleds

21305 Down the Hill on Sleds

How glad Bob and Betty were to see the snow. While they were asleep the snow laid a thick, white blanket over the earth. After breakfast Bob helped father to clear the walks. The snow came up to Bob's knees.

When the deep snow was cleared away Bob brought out his sled and Betty's. Then he went into the house and helped Betty to dress warmly. It was cold outside.

Bob and Betty had great fun coasting down the street. Then they ran back uphill and pulled their sleds after them. They raced to see who could get back first. Bob let Betty start ahead of him because she was smaller than he.

When they grew tired of coasting they played games in the snow. Bob made a big round track in the snow in the back yard. Then he made two paths that crossed in the middle of the circle. Bob chased Betty over the tracks. When he caught her she had to chase him. They called this game Fox and Goose.

Something to Do.

1. Make a picture of Bob and Betty playing Fox and Goose.
2. Make pictures of other things children can do in the snow.
3. Make a picture of a snow man.

She can read, too, for she to goes to school. She will read the stories to Billy. When he goes to school Santa will bring him story books too. Santa brought Billy a picture book. P12 (21330) Playing Indian

21330 Playing Indian

Five little Indians sitting in a row. Are these real or "pretend" Indian? What do you know about Indians? If you were a real Indian boy or girl what would you be doing?

Long ago before there were any whte people or cities here, our country was the home of Indians. The Indians lived outdoors. That is why they were so strong. They had to go hunting and fishing for their meat. Do you see the bow an arrow on the ground? After an Indian boy had brought home his first deer, shot with his own bow and arrow, he was called a "brave." An Indian had to be swift and strong.

The "pretend" Indians in this picture are learning to be strong. Perhaps they have stalked and brought home their first deer. They may be a council to decide what to do with it.

P13 (17463/21331) Making Toys That Go

21331 Making Toys That Go

Do you love to make toys? You can make good toys with some wood, a saw, a hammer, and some nails. You can make houses, chairs, tables, wagons, scooters, wood animals, and many other things.

Toys that go are the most fun of all. Trains, ships, airplanes, windmills, and water wheels are some toys that go.

A ship is easy to make and it will go by itself. It is fun to make a water wheel, too. Water pours on it and makes it turn. If you have a little mill the water wheel will turn it.

Trains are fun to make. Blocks of wood make good cars. You can saw a broomstick for wheels. Then set up a long board for a railroad bridge and watch your train go!

P14 (V21323-Playing Knights and Ladies / 11429-The Red Cross Dog /11429 "You Look Like a Soldier, Major"

11429 "You Look Like a Soldier, Major"

Harry's father is home from the war. He brought major with him. Major is a Red Cross dog. Do you know what that means? After a fight there are many wounded men. Some are lying where they can easily be found by the Red Cross people. Some are not. Perhaps they are hidden under earth or bushes. They cannot move. Many times they cannot even shout. Major's work was to find these wounded soldiers. When he found one he would take the soldier's hat in his mouth and carry it to a Red Cross man. If he could not get the soldier's har he would chew a button off his clothes or pull a handherchief from his pocket. Any of these things would show he had found someone who needed help. Then the Red Cross man would folow Major to the wounded soldier. The soldier would be cared for and perhaps grow well and strong again. In this way Major saved the lives of many men.

Harry's father thought a great deal of Major because Major had been as brave as any soldier. He knew Harry would be perfectly safe if Major looked after him. He thought Major would live Harry and be happy to live with him.
