P5 (11498/11498) Seesaw With a Barrel and a Ladder

11498 Seesaw With a Barrel and a Ladder

One fine summer morning Mrs. Brown called the children to get up early. "We are going out to Grandfather's farm today," she said. It did not take the children long to get dressed. What good times they always had with Grandfather!

There was a large barn where they could play hide and seek. There was a little brook in the pasture where could go wading. How good it felt to take off your shoes and stockings and walk in the cool water.

Grandfather's dog, Rex, always liked to have the children come. He followed them everywhere.

On this day Grandfather was picking apples in the orchard. The children helped to pack the apples in baskets and barrels. When they were through, Grandfather took down the ladder and made a seesaw for them.

Mary stood on the barrel. First Bob and Betty were in the air. Then Mary moved toward them. The barrel turned a little. Bob and Betty went down as Kate and Alice went up. They played on the seesaw till Grandmother called them in for supper.

"I'd like to stay at Grandfather's all the time," said Bob, as Mother tucked him in bed that night.

P7 (21300) Wash day/Washing Doll Clothes

21300 Wash day/Washing Doll Clothes

Guess what day of the week this is. Why. Monday, of course, for it is washing day. Mary's little doll Ethel needs her clothes washed. Mary's mother always has clean clothes for her little girl to wear, so Mary knows that Ethel must have clean cloths too. She said to her mother, "May I wash Ethel's clothes today?" "Yes," said Mother. "Why not call Alice so you two girls can wash in the yard.." So Mary and Alice got yhe soap, a basket of clothespins and a wash tub of water. They hung a clothesline from a pole to a chair. They stretched a drying frame near.

Mary rubbed the clothes with soap and rinsed then in clear water until they were white and clean. Then Alice hung them up for the warm sun and fresh air to make them cleaner. While the little girls worked, Betty and Ethel listened to the talk of the two mothers.

When the clothes are ironed, the two little girls will put away the tub and the basket of clothespins. They will take the drying frame and the clothesline to the closet where they belong. Then the girls girls will dress their dools in clean clothes and play in this beautiful yard with its bright flowers, green grass, and pretty shrubbery.

P9 (21329) Playing With a Toy Train

(21329) Playing With a Toy Train

Everyone in this house is doing something. Father and Mother and Jack are all busy. Father is reading the newspaper. Mother is darning Jack's stocking. Jack is playing with his train. If you could choose which you would like to do, you would play with the train. All boys like toy trains. Sometimes their fathers like to play with them, too. Sometimes when Jack needs help with the switch, Father gets down on the floor and fixes it for him. That is when Jack has the most fun with the train.

Jack needs some more things to make his train a very real one. He needs a station. He needs some bridges and signals. Jack can make those himeself. He can use little wood boes and build the station and some houses for a little town. He can use other little wood boxes to make bridges. If he uses his father's pen knife carefully, he can cut little signals out of wood and paint them red and green. When he makes these things, Jack's train will be going to a real little city.

Could you build a city like this? If you have a train, it might be fun to build two or three cities for your train to pass through.
