The Dog Trot

There is always a breeze in the dog trot, making it a favorite place to be in summer. In hot weather, food was partially prepared here for the table and for canning and preserving.

Grandfather sharpened knives, whittled to make toys and other objects, told stories, baby sat, and helped with the pea shelling. Grandmother rocked the babies, sewed, shelled beans and peas, knitted, crocheted, and gave out advice and discipline. Father and sons used the dog trot in inclement weather for making repairs, preparing seeds for planting while the younger children played all over.

The dog trot came in handy for taking a day-time nap (for baby, child, or grown-up) on a quilt pallet with pillow, for over-night guests, or for members of the family who gave up their bed for company. The dog trot was also used for temporary storage when necessary.
